The Director of Communication for Dr. Mahamudu Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, suggests that the Minority’s invitation to Vice President Bawumia to debate on the mid-year budget is aimed at protecting John Dramani Mahama from facing Bawumia directly.
In response to the Minority caucus inviting Bawumia to participate in the 2024 mid-year budget review debate, Aboagye argues that the NPP has capable MPs who can engage in the debate, making Bawumia’s presence unnecessary.
“The vice president is appreciative of this gesture by the minority, especially considering they have lined up seven to eight individuals to debate him alone. If this is the minority’s way of shielding the vice president from debating ex-president Mahama, then so be it,” Aboagye stated.
Aboagye continued, “Parliament typically doesn’t assemble a lineup of individuals to debate one person on the floor. Based on the criteria set out, every debate has rules. From the minority’s letter to the vice president, it seems clear the vice president may not need to participate. We have capable individuals from the majority side who can handle the minority’s team without his presence.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim emphasized that Bawumia owes Ghanaians an explanation for the government’s performance over the past seven and a half years.
“We are not inviting President Akufo-Addo; rather, we are calling on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as chairman of the Economic Management Team and vice president, to fulfill his constitutional duty under Article 111 to provide accountability. This is not about begging; he owes us that explanation,” Ibrahim asserted.
