Ethiopia Airlines Flights To Eritrea Suspended

Story Highlights
  • Ethiopian Airlines has announced the suspension of all flights to Eritrea
  • This is effective September 30th
  • The suspension is expected to impact passenger transportation

Ethiopian Airlines has announced the suspension of all flights to Eritrea, effective September 30th.

The decision comes as a surprise to the airline, which had recently been granted permission to increase flight frequency.

The resumption of flights between the two neighboring countries in 2018 marked a significant step forward in their reconciliation process, culminating in Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

However, the reasons behind this sudden suspension remain unclear as Eritrean authorities have not provided an official explanation.

Ethiopian Airlines expressed disappointment at the decision, highlighting the unexpected nature of the suspension given that the airline had recently been authorized to expand its services to Eritrea.

As Africa’s largest airline by revenue and profit, the suspension is expected to impact both passenger and cargo transportation between the two countries.
