The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has emphasized the significance of a debate between Dr. Bawumia and John Mahama as pivotal for voters in deciding the outcome of the upcoming December 2024 elections.
In his address in Parliament after the Mid-Year Budget Review on July 24, Afenyo-Markin called on Mahama not to shy away from debating Bawumia, asserting that it would provide Ghanaians with a direct comparison of the parties’ governance credentials.
“We, the Majority Caucus, urge John Mahama not to evade the debate, not to avoid debating Dr. Bawumia. We are unafraid of facts, figures, and track records. While we acknowledge our imperfections and challenges, we firmly believe in our superior governance. This is why Dr. Bawumia is eager to engage on the issues. We reject politics of slander and insinuation,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He continued, “The only way for Ghanaians to discern which party genuinely prioritizes their interests is through a debate. Therefore, the NDC should not evade this opportunity.”
The call for a debate follows Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s invitation to John Dramani Mahama for a presidential debate to elucidate their visions and policies for Ghana. This invitation was made despite earlier reluctance from Mahama’s campaign team regarding such debates.
“I eagerly anticipate a debate with John Mahama on the economy, our nation’s affairs, and governance,” Dr. Bawumia remarked, expressing doubts about Mahama’s willingness to participate, suggesting he might be avoiding the challenge.
