Planting for Food and Jobs Program a ‘Waste of Resources’ – GAWU General Secretary
- GAWU says government wasted GHC3b on Planting for Food and Jobs.
- No tangible results from the program, despite huge investment.
- GAWU calls for audit before second phase rollout.
- Government prioritizes policy intentions over outcomes.
The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has expressed strong criticism of the government’s handling of the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme. According to GAWU, the government has “wasted financial resources” under the program, which aims to provide food security.
In the mid-year budget presented to Parliament on July 23, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam revealed that nearly GHC3 billion has been spent under the initiative. However, GAWU General Secretary Edward Kareweh has called for an audit of the program before the second phase is rolled out.
Kareweh expressed shock that the government is claiming success in agriculture despite the program’s failures. He emphasized that the policies are not working and that the government is only interested in policy intentions rather than outcomes.
Kareweh questioned the lack of results from the program, despite the significant investment of nearly GHC3 billion. He highlighted the struggles of those in the poultry industry, who are in need of support but are not receiving it.
Kareweh lamented that businesses are collapsing due to lack of support, despite the government’s claims of success. GAWU’s criticism of the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme highlights concerns about the government’s management of agricultural policies and programs.
