The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has marked a significant milestone with the commissioning of the refurbished Salaga Slave Market and Wells, a crucial step in promoting heritage tourism in the country.
The ceremony, held in Salaga to launch Emancipation 2024, was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including the Lepowura, representing the Kpembewura, Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Egyapa Mercer, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Richard Broni, GTA Board Chairman Seth Adjei Baah, and Member of Parliament for the area.
In his welcome address, MCE Richard Broni expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture and the GTA for fulfilling their promise to redevelop the site after their visit to the Kpembewura in 2023.
GTA CEO Akwasi Agyeman emphasized the significance of the Salaga Slave Market and Wells in Ghana’s heritage tourism offerings, stressing the importance of acknowledging the past while striving for a future of healing and unity.
Mr. Agyeman thanked all stakeholders for their collaborative efforts in restoring and preserving these historical sites, highlighting GTA’s commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural heritage.
Minister Egyapa Mercer underscored the need to honor the memory of those who suffered during the transatlantic slave trade, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to promoting heritage tourism and fostering connections with the diaspora.
The Lepowura Bore-enasa I, speaking on behalf of the Kpembewura, pledged the Traditional Authority’s support in preserving the site.
