Gov’t Directs Salary Freeze for Colleges of Education Teachers

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to halt the payment of July salaries for all teaching staff at Colleges of Education.

In a letter dated July 22, 2024, the Commission cited the directive as per the request of Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. This action follows the Colleges of Education Teachers Association Ghana (CETAG) continuing their strike, initiated in June this year.

“The Minister for Education has instructed the suspension of salaries for all teaching staff of the Colleges of Education (CETAG) for July 2024 due to the ongoing illegal strike since June 2024,” stated Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Head of IPP at GTEC, in the letter.

CETAG asserts that their strike is lawful, driven by the non-implementation of a pending arbitration award by the National Labour Commission (NLC). They have cautioned against any attempt by the government to freeze their salaries, threatening legal recourse if necessary.
