The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has solidified Ghana’s position as a regional petroleum hub by signing new agreements with Senegal and Gambia for the export of petroleum products.
This expansion adds to the existing network of countries importing Ghanaian fuel, including Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, and Togo.
Ghana’s Growing Petroleum Industry:
- In 2023 alone, Ghana exported a staggering 385,154,100 liters of petroleum products to neighboring countries.
- The industry boasts over 3,000 service providers, delivering over four million metric tonnes of fuel annually.
- This rapid growth has contributed significantly to Ghana’s GDP, estimated at over GH¢71 billion in 2023.
NPA’s Strategic Initiatives:
The NPA has implemented several strategies to ensure the industry’s success and protect consumers:
- Price Regulation: The introduction of a transparent automatic price adjustment formula has replaced annual regulated prices with bi-weekly and daily adjustments.
- Quality Control: A zero-tolerance policy for toxic fuel has been enforced, aligning Ghana with global standards.
- Technology Adoption: The NPA has invested in technology to monitor fuel quality and quantity, including the petroleum marking scheme, bulk road vehicle tracking, and electronic cargo tracking systems.
Government Support and Future Outlook:
The government has praised the NPA’s efforts, particularly in managing the Gold for Oil program and the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM).
The Minister of Energy emphasized the importance of continued investment in infrastructure, technology, and supply chain resilience to secure Ghana’s energy future.
With a focus on enhancing Ghanaian content, capacity building, and creating job opportunities, the government aims to ensure that the benefits of the petroleum industry are widely shared among citizens.
As Ghana strengthens its position as a regional petroleum leader, the industry is poised for continued growth and development.
