  • SMP classification of MTN aims to promote fair competition, not burden operations
  • Ghana ranked 3rd cheapest in Africa and 2nd in West Africa for mobile internet data pricing

The National Communication Authority (NCA) has responded to public concerns regarding high internet data pricing, which has been affecting businesses and sparking outrage on social media. In a statement dated June 21, 2024, the NCA clarified that the Significant Market Power (SMP) classification of MTN aims to promote fair competition in the telecommunications industry, not burden MTN’s operations.

The Authority explained that measures such as unbalanced interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality will promote competition, encourage innovation, and protect consumers’ interests. These measures will enable other operators to compete effectively, offer sustainable pricing, and invest in improving service quality.

Contrary to public concerns, the NCA cited a report that ranked Ghana as the third-cheapest country in Africa and second in West Africa for mobile internet data pricing. The NCA assured consumers that it will continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure reliable internet access.

“The SMP classification is aimed at promoting fair competition in the industry, not burdening MTN’s operations,” the NCA statement read. “We will continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that consumers have access to reliable and affordable internet services.”
