A tragic motor accident on the Huhunya-Asesewa road in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region has resulted in the death of one person and left 14 others critically injured. The incident occurred on Friday when a Hyundai H100 bus collided with a motorcycle, causing the fatalities and injuries.
According to Nene Teye Kwame, the Dademantse of Huhunya, the accident was caused by the dusty nature of the road, which reduced visibility and led to the crash. He blamed the contractors, Maripoma Construction, for failing to water the road, which has been a persistent problem for about 180 days.
“The dust is killing us, and I believe that if the road was watered frequently, the vehicle that was crushed with the motorbike wouldn’t have happened,” Nene Kwame said. He emphasized the importance of watering the road to prevent respiratory diseases and save lives.
The dusty condition of the road has also affected traders who operate their shops along the road, forcing several shops to close due to the dust. Nene Kwame noted that the situation has negatively impacted the local businesses.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Yilo Krobo Municipality, Mr. Eric Tetteh, has called on Maripoma Construction to water the Huhunya-Asesewa road. He emphasized the need for the contractor to take responsibility for maintaining the road and preventing dust-related problems.
“If you’re building a road and you remove the bitumen on it, there will undoubtedly be dust, and it’s vital to water it so that homeowners and other businesses won’t suffer,” Mr. Tetteh said.
