  • The association cited rising costs of fuel and essential items as the reasons behind their initial proposal to hike fares
  • The association's Public Relations Officer urged drivers to maintain current fare rates

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has decided to suspend its previously announced 15% hike in transport fares, originally slated to commence on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The association attributed the proposed fare increase to escalating costs of fuel and essential items like spare parts crucial to the transport sector.

However, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has advised commuters to disregard the initial announcement.

David Agboado, Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, clarified in an interview that implementing the fare hike at this time would further burden the public. Hence, they have collectively opted to postpone the increase.

“We, as transport operators, have deliberated and reached a consensus. While costs have risen—fuel, spare parts, everything—it is not opportune to burden commuters now. Therefore, we have decided not to proceed with the fare increase,” he explained.

Agboado further urged fellow drivers to maintain current fare rates until circumstances permit an adjustment.

“I urge my colleagues to be patient. We act in the interest of the public. This decision is also for their benefit. They should not be upset; the right time will come,” he added.
