The Mahama 2024 Campaign has strongly condemned the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) for announcing a presidential debate for the 2024 elections without consultation. In a statement, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the Spokesperson for the Mahama 2024 Campaign, described the IEA’s failure to officially invite the NDC before its announcement as “completely unacceptable”.
The IEA recently announced plans to organize Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates leading up to Ghana’s 2024 General Elections, but the Mahama Campaign says this was done without engaging or informing the National Democratic Congress. The Campaign Team pointed out that the IEA lacks the authority to organize elections-related activities, citing the Constitution of Ghana.
The Mahama Campaign accused the IEA of attempting to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the NPP, stating that Mr. Mahama and his running mate Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang have been engaging with the citizenry for many years.
The Campaign emphasized that the NDC has been engaging with the public through various platforms, including online and offline conversations, and has focused on addressing the needs and concerns of Ghanaians. The Mahama Campaign questioned the IEA’s motives and authority to organize elections-related activities, stating that it is not a neutral body.
The Campaign also highlighted the NDC’s commitment to engaging with the public and promoting transparency and accountability in governance. The Mahama Campaign called on the IEA to retract its announcement and engage with the NDC and other stakeholders in a transparent and inclusive manner.
The Mahama 2024 Campaign strongly rejects the IEA’s attempt to organize a presidential debate without consultation and calls for a more inclusive and transparent approach to promoting democratic engagement in Ghana.
