“Ministry of Education Denies Owing GH₵6bn to Companies and Individuals in FSHS Programme”

The Ministry of Education has refuted claims made by the Minority caucus in Parliament that the government owes over GH₵6 billion to organizations and individuals involved in the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy.

According to the Minority caucus, the government has failed to pay over GH₵300 million used in the procurement of GH₵1.3 million tablets for the “One Student, One Laptop” initiative. Additionally, the Minority caucus alleged that the West African Examinations Council is owed GH₵224 million.

However, the spokesperson for the Education Ministry, Mr. Kwasi Kwarteng, has labeled these claims as unfounded. Mr. Kwarteng stated that the Ministry would have been more grateful if the Minority had provided more clarification and details on where they obtained such figures.

He emphasized that the Ministry’s records do not reflect such representations, even in terms of outstanding arrears owed to vendors, organizations, and individuals they work with. Mr. Kwarteng specifically addressed the claim regarding the “One Student, One Tablet Initiative,” stating that the distribution is in phases, and the government pays based on performance.

He explained that the contract with the supplier is clear, and the government’s payments are tied to the supplier’s performance. Mr. Kwarteng’s response aims to clear up any misconceptions and provide accurate information regarding the Ministry’s financial obligations. The Ministry of Education remains committed to transparency and accountability in its financial dealings, and Mr. Kwarteng’s statement is a testament to this commitment.
