The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, embarked on a working visit to the Kingdom of Spain on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. The invitation was extended by the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares.
During the visit, the Foreign Ministers engaged in in-depth discussions on matters of mutual interest at both the bilateral and multilateral levels. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the existing bond of friendship between the two nations and exploring new areas of cooperation.
The discussions encompassed various sectors, including trade, investment, tourism, defense, counter-terrorism, aviation, renewable energy, and more. Both ministers acknowledged the potential for growth and development in these areas and pledged to work together to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
As part of the working visit, Madam Ayorkor Botchwey also held productive discussions with the Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu I Boher. The focus was on leveraging tourism as a national development and education tool, with an emphasis on capitalizing on its potential.
The Spanish side reiterated their commitment to facilitating capacity-building programs for stakeholders in the tourism sector. This gesture aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of Ghanaian tourism professionals, fostering growth and development in the industry.
Both nations pledged their commitment to cooperating within the context of UN Tourism, as members of the Executive Council. This collaboration aims to promote sustainable tourism practices and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
A significant announcement was made during the visit, as the Spanish Foreign Minister unveiled a pilot project on circular migration. This initiative will enable Ghanaians to work in Spain for a limited period, primarily in the agriculture sector, with possibilities for expansion and extension in the future.
The visit culminated in the signing of two crucial Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between Ghana and Spain. The first MoU focuses on Tourism, while the second addresses Cooperation in the field of Sports.
These agreements mark a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between Ghana and Spain, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and cooperation in the years to come. The successful working visit underscores the strong bond between Ghana and Spain, as they continue to explore new avenues for growth, development, and mutual benefit.
