Romanian police took US rapper Wiz Khalifa into custody on Sunday following his performance at the Beach, Please! Festival on the Black Sea Coast. The 36-year-old rapper was charged with illegal drug possession after being found with over 18 grams of cannabis, according to Agence France Presse.
In a statement, the Romanian anti-organised crime prosecutors (DIICOT) said, “During a performance at a music festival held in the resort of Costinesti, the accused was found to have possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and to have consumed (on stage) another quantity in the form of a handmade cigarette.”
Cannabis is considered a “risk drug” in Romania, and possession can lead to up to ten years in prison. Videos circulating on social media show Wiz Khalifa smoking on stage and being escorted by police.
In a statement on his X account, Wiz Khalifa said, “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
According to sources, Khalifa was taken in for questioning along with others but was not held in police custody. An investigation is ongoing.
