The People’s National Convention (PNC) has requested that the Electoral Commission (EC) refrain from issuing the final registration certificate for the People’s National Party (PNP).

In a statement submitted to the EC on July 16, PNC’s legal representatives raised concerns about the similarity in names, noting that PNP is the predecessor party to the PNC.

They argued that this resemblance could create confusion among voters.

Additionally, the PNC highlighted that the PNP’s use of the palm nut tree as its emblem might further mislead the electorate into believing the two parties are identical.

They emphasized that since many executives of the PNP are former PNC officials, the historical ties between the two parties could reinforce the perception that they are essentially the same entity.
