A passenger train traveling from Chandigarh to Dibrugarh derailed in India’s Uttar Pradesh state on Thursday, leaving at least two people dead and 20 injured. The accident occurred near the holy city of Ayodhya at approximately 2:30 PM local time.

Indian media reports indicate that at least four carriages jumped the tracks,

with some overturning onto their sides. Visuals show passengers scrambling from the wreckage.

Authorities have deployed rescue teams, medical personnel, and ambulances to the scene. The injured are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals and clinics.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and directed officials to prioritize rescue efforts and ensure the injured receive proper medical care.

India’s vast railway network is undergoing a $30 billion modernization project aimed at improving safety and efficiency. However, experts point out that the system, burdened by age and wear, still faces significant challenges.

According to official data, an average of 20,000 people lost their lives in train-related accidents between 2017 and 2021. This incident highlights the ongoing need for safety improvements within India’s railway infrastructure.
