- Afia Akoto claims A Plus has a large social media following, amplifying the defamatory statement
A member of the governing New Patriotic Party’s Campaign Team, Alberta Maame Afia Akoto, has taken legal action against musician and politician Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A Plus, alleging defamation.
The lawsuit follows recent remarks made by A Plus concerning Afia Akoto during a period of heightened conflict between the two. A Plus had publicly claimed that Afia Akoto had sent nude photos to Maxwell Mensah, the husband of TV personality Nana Ama McBrown, in an attempt to seduce him.
In response to these allegations, Afia Akoto demanded that A Plus substantiate his claims or face legal consequences. When A Plus failed to provide evidence supporting his statements, Afia Akoto proceeded to file a lawsuit at the High Court (General Jurisdiction) in Accra. In her lawsuit, she seeks damages totaling GHS 5,000,000.00 (Five Million Ghana Cedis) for defamation, including exemplary and punitive damages.
According to the statement of claim filed at the high court registry on Tuesday, 16 July 2024, Afia Akoto highlighted A Plus’s significant social media presence as a factor contributing to the potential reach and impact of his statements.
“A-Plus has about 500,000 followers on Facebook, 10,000 followers on Instagram, and 10,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter),” Afia Akoto’s statement read.
The legal action centers around a Facebook post made by A Plus on or about 12 July 2024, where he allegedly made defamatory remarks against Afia Akoto.
