The Transport Operators Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increment in transport fares, effective Monday, July 22. According to the association, the increment has become necessary due to the recent surge in petroleum and spare parts prices, coupled with economic hardship.
The association stated that some oil marketing companies (OMCs) have begun upwardly adjusting their prices at the pumps, following the commencement of July’s second pricing window. For instance, Shell, one of the leading oil marketing companies, has increased the price of petrol from GHȼ14.80 to GHȼ15.10 per litre, while the price of diesel has risen from GH¢14.92 to GHȼ15.25 per litre.
The prevailing economic difficulties and other factors are worsening the living conditions of transport owners and drivers, the association said. Therefore, the Transport Operators Association of Ghana is urging all Ghanaians to take note of the increment and cooperate with transport operators.
The association stated that the increment is necessary to ensure the survival of transport operators and to maintain the quality of service. The leadership of the association, including Paa Willie, Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, Yaw Barima, PRO of the True Drivers Union, David Agboado, PRO of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, and Nana Owiredu, Deputy Secretary of C-DAG, signed the statement.
They urged the public to understand the difficulties facing transport operators and to cooperate with them to ensure a smooth transportation system. The association assured the public that they will continue to provide quality service and ensure the safety of passengers, despite the challenges facing them.
