Parliament Considers Bauxite and Lithium Mining Agreements

Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has submitted mining lease agreements for bauxite and lithium to Parliament for approval.

The agreements include:

Bauxite: Between the government and Ashanti Bauxite Limited Company for mining in the Nyinahini Block 2 Area, Atwima Mponua District, Ashanti Region.
Lithium: Between the government and Barari DV Ghana Limited for mining at Ewoyaa, Central Region.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu presented the agreements on behalf of the Lands and Natural Resources Minister. Approval from Parliament is required before mining can proceed.

Speaker Alban Sumana Bagbin referred the agreements to the Committee on Lands and Natural Resources for review and a report back to the House.

Prior to the presentation, the Minority party in Parliament raised concerns about the process, particularly regarding the speed of approval for such important projects.
