A Kenyan judge has ordered Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, 33, to remain in custody for 30 days while authorities investigate his alleged involvement in the murders and dismemberment of 42 women.

Police arrested Khalusha after finding mutilated bodies in a Nairobi garbage dump. He is accused of starting the killings in 2022 with his wife.

During a court appearance in the Kenyan capital, Khalusha’s lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, downplayed the allegations, focusing instead on a procedural matter regarding Khalusha’s detention. Initially brought to an incorrect court, Khalusha was eventually brought before a magistrate who approved the police request to hold him.

The case has drawn scrutiny to the Kenyan authorities.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the possibility of police involvement or failure to prevent the killings.

Tensions flared at the crime scene over the weekend when tear gas was used to disperse volunteers searching for more victims. Rights groups have a history of accusing Kenyan police of unlawful killings and extrajudicial activities.
