Chelsea Midfielder Fernandez Apologizes For Social Media Video
- Fernandez is facing disciplinary action
- Fofana described the video as "uninhibited racism."
- Fernandez has apologized publicly
Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernandez is facing disciplinary action from his club Chelsea after posting a video on social media that contained a chant deemed racist by the French Football Federation (FFF).
The FFF considers the song, sung by Fernandez and some Argentina teammates, to be offensive and discriminatory towards France’s black players. Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, who is French, criticized the video on social media, calling it “uninhibited racism.”
Fernandez has apologized publicly, stating the video “does not reflect my beliefs or my character.” He expressed regret for getting caught up in the celebratory atmosphere.
Chelsea acknowledged Fernandez’s apology and announced internal disciplinary procedures. Anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out called the video “unacceptable” and urged relevant parties to take action beyond apologies, emphasizing education and accountability.
The FFF plans to file a complaint with FIFA regarding the video.n6
