The Minority has expressed strong opposition to the proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180). The amendments, which were laid in Parliament by the Transport Minister on June 14, 2024, have been met with widespread public condemnation.
The Minority has instructed its members on the Committee to strongly oppose the amendments at the committee level. Additionally, all 137 NDC Members of Parliament have been directed to vote against the Legislative Instrument when it is brought to the floor.
The amendments aim to update the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), but also include provisions granting certain public officials, including Ministers of State and Members of Parliament, the privilege to use sirens on the road and not be liable for exceeding speed limits.
This aspect of the regulations has drawn huge public condemnation, with many Ghanaians expressing outrage on social media and other platforms.
The Minority has stated that it stands with the Ghanaian public on this issue and wishes to signal its opposition to the amendment without any reservations.
The government has been accused of trying to pass the amendments without proper consultation and engagement with stakeholders.
The Minority has called on the Minister of Transport to immediately withdraw the said Legislative Instrument before it matures into law after 21 sitting days.
The opposition has also highlighted the need for the government to address more pressing issues facing the country, such as high cost of living, food inflation, unemployment, high cost of fuel, and the depreciation of the Cedi.
The Minority has emphasized that the government’s priorities should be focused on addressing these critical issues rather than pushing through controversial amendments.
The Minority has made it clear that it will not support the proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), and has called on the government to withdraw the Legislative Instrument immediately.
