Four migrants tragically lost their lives after their overcrowded boat capsized while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to Britain.
French authorities report that a navy patrol boat spotted the incident early Friday morning, with migrants already in the water near Boulogne-sur-Mer. Sadly, four people found unconscious could not be revived. Sixty-three others were rescued.
UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her deep sorrow over the “truly awful” incident.
The inflatable boat reportedly deflated, causing some passengers to fall overboard. A helicopter arriving on the scene found people clinging to the wreckage and others drifting in the water.
Thankfully, a collaborative rescue effort involving a fishing vessel, the French navy, and coastguard teams managed to save 63 individuals. All survivors received medical attention upon reaching shore.
While two UK vessels launched to assist were ultimately not needed, the incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous Channel crossings.
French authorities expressed concern about the unsafe conditions these migrants endure. They noted that the overloaded, low-quality boats often lack proper inflation, floors, or life jackets, significantly increasing the risk of breakdowns and disasters.
