A race against time is underway in Nepal as rescuers desperately search for over 60 people missing after a massive landslide hurled two buses into a raging river.

The horrific incident, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, unfolded pre-dawn on Friday. Only three passengers have emerged alive, recounting their terrifying ordeal.

Nandan Das, a survivor, spoke of the bus suddenly rolling “down all of a sudden into the river.” He described clinging to life in the darkness as he battled the current, boulders, and thick foliage. “God saved us,” he recounted, expressing his gratitude for reaching the shore.

Jogishwar Raya, another survivor, painted a picture of the bus violently “trembling and overturning” before plunging into the water. His account is marred by the agonizing loss of his family members, who remain missing.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has mobilized all government agencies to intensify the search and rescue effort. This tragedy adds to the grim tally of the monsoon season, which has already seen numerous deaths due to floods and landslides.

Authorities urge residents in the southeast to be extra cautious as major rivers surge towards dangerous levels. Nepal also grapples with poorly maintained roads and reckless driving, contributing to a high number of road accidents.
