The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, has cautioned parents against abandoning their children in unsafe locations, stressing that this puts their lives at risk. Instead, she advises them to engage with the Department of Social Welfare to find a safer solution.

During her two-day working visit to the Ashanti Region, Minister Newman visited the Kumasi Children’s Home to assess the challenges faced by the facility. Accompanied by Ministry officials, she sought to understand the difficulties confronting public orphanages and ensure that children are raised in a secure and nurturing environment.

Established in 1965, the Kumasi Children’s Home currently provides shelter, care, protection, and education to 71 vulnerable children. While acknowledging the government’s commitment to supporting the facility, Minister Newman emphasized the importance of public support to meet the children’s needs.

“As the government works to provide for these children, we encourage others to support them as a social responsibility,” she said.

Expressing satisfaction with the facility’s conditions, Minister Newman acknowledged that improvements are still necessary. She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to upholding the rights of vulnerable children, ensuring their well-being, and addressing the challenges faced by the facility, including financial and staffing issues.

“We will take steps to address these challenges and ensure our vulnerable children receive the care they deserve,” she assured.
