Manchester United Near Deal For Dutch Striker Zirkzee
- Manchester United are on the verge of signing Zirkzee
- This move comes with a twist
- Zirkzee, 23, has a history with Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of signing Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for a reported £33.7 million.
This move comes with a twist. While the transfer fee is close to Zirkzee’s £33.67 million release clause, United are opting to pay slightly more in exchange for a more favorable payment structure that adheres to Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
United’s financial situation necessitates a measured approach in the transfer market, and this deal reflects that. The departure of Anthony Martial at the end of last season left a void in attack, further amplified by Marcus Rashford’s struggles for form.
While the arrival of Rasmus Hojlund offered hope, his reliance on playing time became a concern, especially after losing his starting spot in the FA Cup final to Bruno Fernandes in a false nine role.
Zirkzee, 23, has a history with Bayern Munich before joining Bologna for £7.15 million in 2022. He impressed last season, scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances and contributing to Bologna’s surprise qualification for the Champions League.
Despite being included in the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 squad, Zirkzee saw limited action, making only two brief substitute appearances totaling four minutes. His most recent outing came in the team’s semi-final loss to England, where he was brought on after the deciding goal.
The signing of Zirkzee signals United’s intent to bolster their attacking options while navigating financial restrictions.
