“Mahama Campaign Denies Seeking Russian Government’s Support for Election 2024”
- Mahama's campaign denies seeking Russian government support.
- Mahama launched his book's Russian translation in Moscow.
- The campaign urges Ghanaians to disregard the false allegation.
The Mahama Campaign Team has strongly denied allegations that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, sought assistance from the Russian government for the December polls.
According to the campaign team member on Thursday, July 11, 2024 claimed that Mr. Mahama had visited Russia to seek support from the Russian authorities ahead of the 2024 elections. The publication alleged that Mahama’s visit was under the guise of launching a Russian version of his autobiography, “My First Coup D’etat”.
However, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the Spokesperson of Mahama, has dismissed the publication as “shadowy and unethical journalism practice” aimed at defaming the flagbearer. In a statement on Friday, July 12, 2024, Mogtari explained that Mahama’s visit to Russia was solely for the launch of the Russian language translation of his memoir, “My First Coup D’etat and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa” at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
She emphasized that Mahama did not meet with any Russian authorities to seek support for the elections, as alleged by Asaase Radio and Daily Guide. The Campaign Team has urged Ghanaians to debunk the allegation, stating that no such thing occurred during Mahama’s stay in Moscow. Mogtari described the publication as a desperate attempt to tarnish Mahama’s reputation and undermine his candidacy.
She assured Ghanaians that Mahama remains committed to a peaceful and transparent election, and will not engage in any unethical practices to win power. The Campaign Team has called on the media to be responsible and factual in their reporting, and to avoid spreading false information that can compromise the integrity of the election.
