The Ga Traditional Council (GTC), led by the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has announced a clean-up exercise in the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra on Saturday, July 13, 2024. All shops and markets in the CBD are expected to remain closed from 6 am to 12 noon to facilitate the exercise.
The clean-up campaign, dubbed “Homowo Clean-up Campaign,” is being organized in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, and other stakeholders. The Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Gilbert Nii Ankrah, confirmed the closure of shops in an interview with the media.
He stated that several areas, including Sempe, Gbese, Abola, Asere, Dogo Beach, Otublohum, Akumanjen, Ngleshie, and June 4th Market, have already been cleaned. Ankrah emphasized that sustaining the cleanliness depends on the residents and urged them to come out in their numbers to participate in the exercise.
The clean-up exercise aims to enhance environmental cleanliness across the city and transform Accra into one of the cleanest cities in Africa. Businesses exempted from the closure include pharmaceutical and health facilities, as well as financial institutions, to ensure the safety and efficiency of the clean-up activities.
Residents who fail to participate in the exercise will be sanctioned in accordance with the AMA Sanitation, Cleaning, and Communal Labour Bye-laws 2017. The exercise will be strictly enforced by Environmental Health Officers, and the public is urged to comply to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
