Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out against the federal government’s policy of categorizing electricity consumers into different bands, calling it “unprecedented” and “unfair”.
In a post on her social media account, Henshaw argued that Nigeria is the only country that implements such a system, and urged the government to provide equal access to electricity for all, with fair payment terms.
“Nowhere, absolutely nowhere in the world, is there this purported ‘banding’ of electricity supply,” Henshaw wrote. “Give everyone access to electricity and let them pay fairly for their consumption. Yet, every 2 to 3 months, there is an increase in tariff!! Daylight robbery in darkness.”
Henshaw’s comments were in response to journalist Olive Modi’s remarks on Nigeria’s erratic power supply, which Modi likened to a toxic relationship.
Modi had noted that the electricity companies’ classification of distribution into different bands, with varying frequencies of supply and payment rates, has led to complaints from consumers who feel they are being overcharged despite experiencing frequent power outages.
