NPP’s Choice of NAPO as Running Mate Betrays Principles – Fifi Kwetey
- NPP's choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh contradicts principles of integrity
- He argues that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary Ghanaians
- Kwetey believes Bawumia and NAPO ticket will heighten the collective despair among Ghanaians
Fifi Fiave Kwetey, General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticizes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for straying from its principles by selecting Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as its running mate for the upcoming elections.
Mr Kwetey argues that if the NPP truly valued integrity, trustworthiness, and competence, it would not have paired Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In his view, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is out of touch with the people and poses a risk to the NPP’s chances in 2024. He believes that combining NAPO with Dr. Bawumia will only worsen the collective despair among Ghanaians.
Kwetey expressed these sentiments in a social media post, stating, “Their leadership promises nothing but a continuous increase in our collective despair. NAPO lacks the honesty and humility to even acknowledge the existence of ‘dumsor,’ just as Bawumia lacks the integrity and humility to admit his failures as head of the economic management team.”

The formal confirmation and subsequent announcement of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate came as no surprise. It reflects the deplorable state of leadership under Akufo-Addo’s tenure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ghana. NAPO’s elevation to the Vice-Presidential candidacy is a stark indicator of the NPP’s abandonment of core values and principles.
It is glaringly obvious that the NPP is no longer driven by principles such as integrity, trustworthiness, empathy, competence, and genuine acumen. Instead, their focus has shifted towards appeasing specific factions and individuals who do the bidding of the establishment, disregarding the greater good and interest of the country. The selection of NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate is a clear demonstration of the NPP’s preference for politics of convenience over conviction, confirming the party’s descent into opportunism and mediocrity.
Ordinarily, a poor ticket for the NPP shouldn’t bother the NDC. Yet, in a robust democracy, we need strong opposing and alternative policies and should wish the NPP well. However, given the depths to which leadership in the NPP has sunk, the Bawumia/NAPO pair starkly contrasts and pales in comparison to the NDC’s experienced, visionary, and principled ticket of John Mahama and Prof. Naana Jane.
Dr. Bawumia, the so-called economic wizkid, has failed miserably to manage the economy he was brought to oversee, resulting in increased economic woes for Ghanaians, despite his lofty promises and his position as the head of the economic management team. His refusal to accept responsibility for his failures and his tendency to lie brazenly and joke about his unmet promises highlight his inadequacies.
On the other hand, NAPO, known for his arrogance and detachment from the masses, brings a dangerous combination to the table. His tenure at the Education Ministry was marred by chaos and mismanagement, and his performance in the Energy Ministry has resurrected “dumsor” and increased the energy sector’s challenges. Their leadership promises nothing but a relentless increase in our collective despair.
NAPO lacks the honesty and humility to even acknowledge the existence of ‘dumsor,’ just as Bawumia lacks the integrity and humility to accept that he has been an abysmal failure as the head of the economic management team. Their refusal to own up to their failures is not only disgraceful but also indicative of their utter incompetence and disconnect from the harsh realities faced by Ghanaians.
The 2024 election is a battle for the soul of our country, and it will be fought on principles, values, and conviction. Ghanaians deserve leaders with strong moral character and integrity to rescue us from the depths of decadence into which the NPP has sunk us. Imagine if Ghana had no choice but the failed economist and the arrogant NAPO. This underscores the importance of our democracy, giving us the hope and power to choose better leaders.
Our democracy enables us, come December 7th, to resist the imposition of leaders who will only aggravate our woes, rub it in our faces, talk down on us, abandon their promises, and evade accountability.
John Mahama and Prof. Naana Jane embody the true values and principles crucial for the kind of leadership Ghana needs now. The upcoming elections provide a chance for Ghanaians to choose proven, reliable leadership over a rebranded duo of failures. Let’s unite and rally around the NDC’s choice of experienced, credible, and honest leaders. This is a communal effort for God and country. Let’s vote for the most reliable, tried, and tested leaders with a proven track record.
