Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Procures 8 Air Conditioners for National Theatre

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has addressed the long-standing ventilation needs of the National Theatre by procuring eight air conditioners for the facility. According to Enock Quaye, the Accountant and Acting Estate Officer, the eight pairs of 10 horsepower air conditioners, costing approximately GH₵800,000, will be installed in the coming weeks to provide a more comfortable experience for patrons.

This development comes six months after the carpets at the National Theatre were replaced. The AC system has been a persistent concern, with many complaining about the unbearable heat during performances. In 2018, four movable ACs were purchased to augment the malfunctioning central AC system, but the problem persisted.

Former Estate Officer Welbeck Tamakloe explained in 2021 that repairing broken parts of the AC system was challenging due to the facility’s age and outdated design. Creatives like Nana Kwame Ampadu, Fiifi Coleman, Chief Moomen, and Kojo Antwi have expressed dissatisfaction with the National Theatre’s conditions. Dr. Mensa Otabil recently described the National Theatre as being “under severe malnourishment”.

The National Theatre, built by the Chinese and opened in 1992, is a multi-functional venue for various performances and events. Despite its cultural significance, the facility has faced maintenance challenges and criticism from artists and patrons alike.
