President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged John Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, to recognize his contribution to the implementation of the Free SHS policy and refrain from appropriating its success solely for himself.
Akufo-Addo pointed out that when he initially proposed the Free SHS policy, then-President Mahama opposed it. However, in recent statements, Mahama has asserted that his administration laid the groundwork for the policy’s initiation in 2015.
Speaking at an event honoring the NPP’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Akufo-Addo expressed disbelief at Mahama’s claims, emphasizing the inconsistency in his earlier criticism of the policy. He stated, “Today, the leader of the NDC claims he is the one who introduced Free SHS. If he introduced the policy, why did he criticize us when we intended to introduce it?”
Akufo-Addo further challenged Mahama to credit him for the policy’s success, highlighting the importance of acknowledging political contributions accurately.
