Youngest African Leader Tasked With Reuniting ECOWAS After Military Takeovers

- Faye tasked to reunify ECOWAS
- Faye's youth and leadership style emphasizes sovereignty
- The task won't be easy
Senegal’s President Basirou Diomaye Faye, at 44 the youngest president in Africa, has been tasked with the challenging mission of reunifying the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by bringing back Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, which left the bloc after military takeovers.
As a peace envoy, Faye’s youth and leadership style, which emphasizes sovereignty and breaking with the old order, may be assets in dialogue with the military leaders.
However, the task won’t be easy, as the three countries have concerns about ECOWAS’s operations and potential foreign interference.
Faye’s success will depend on his ability to coordinate and agree with other leaders, and potentially reform ECOWAS for a more sustainable and self-reliant future.
