New LPG Program Makes Gas More Accessible and Creates Jobs In Ghana

Story Highlights
  • NPA is launching a new program
  • The program is expected to create new job opportunities
  • These jobs include managing LPG depots

Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is launching a new program, the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM), to make liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) more affordable and accessible, especially for those with limited capital.

Lower Barrier to Entry for Entrepreneurs

Traditionally, starting an LPG business required a significant investment to set up filling stations. The CRM removes this barrier by focusing on a network of depots and exchange points. This allows entrepreneurs with less capital to participate in the LPG distribution chain.

Creating Jobs for Ghanaians

The program is expected to create new job opportunities for young Ghanaians. These jobs include managing LPG depots, operating exchange points, and transporting LPG cylinders.

Consumer Week Launch and Educational Campaign

The NPA recently launched the CRM program during Consumer Week Celebrations in Koforidua, Eastern Region. The event included an educational campaign to promote safe LPG use.

Benefits of the CRM

  • Easier entry for new businesses, especially those with limited capital.
  • Increased job opportunities for Ghanaians.
  • Improved safety in LPG distribution and use.
  • Potentially lower LPG prices due to reduced distribution costs.

Government and Industry Support

The NPA is working with the government to reduce taxes on LPG, making it more affordable for consumers. Additionally, industry partners like the Association of Oil Marketing Companies (AOMCs) are collaborating with the NPA to ensure the program’s success.

Environmental Benefits

By encouraging the use of LPG for cooking, the CRM can help reduce deforestation and air pollution caused by charcoal and firewood.

Looking Ahead

The NPA aims to achieve a 50% LPG penetration rate by 2030. The CRM is seen as a critical step towards achieving this goal by making LPG a more attractive and accessible option for Ghanaians.
