Joyce Bawah Mogtari, spokesperson for John Mahama’s campaign team, has dismissed suggestions for a pre-election debate between Mahama and NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Despite appeals from analysts and stakeholders, Bawah Mogtari rejected the notion of a debate between the two frontrunners.
In an interview on Accra-based television, Bawah Mogtari lauded Mahama’s vigor and extensive knowledge but hesitated to accept a debate invitation unexpectedly.
She argued that given the government’s current performance, a debate is unnecessary, expressing unwavering confidence in Mahama’s ability to surpass any presidential contender in such a forum.
She hinted that Mahama’s preparedness and expertise are so robust that a debate would only underscore his superiority, making it redundant at this stage.
“I personally have no desire for a debate; we engage when our issues align… Considering our current situation and this administration’s shortcomings, I question the need for a debate,” Bawah Mogtari remarked, suggesting that Mahama’s unmatched energy and knowledge are beyond dispute.
She added, “I’m confident he would prevail in any debate, as we’ve seen in his debates with candidate Akufo-Addo. But I don’t think an immediate strict scrutiny is necessary.”
Bawah Mogtari left open the possibility of future discussions but stressed that the decision rests with higher authorities in the party.
