Kenyan distance runner Faith Kipyegon cemented her dominance in the 1,500 meters by shattering her own world record at the Diamond League meet in Paris on Sunday.
Kipyegon blazed across the finish line in a stunning 3:49.04, shaving off a sliver of a second from her previous record of 3:49.11 set in Italy last year.
“I knew the potential for a world record was there after my recent fast time in Kenya’s Olympic trials,” Kipyegon shared. She clocked an impressive 3:53.98 at the trials, but emphasized, “My main goal here was to compete and assess my fitness ahead of defending my Olympic title.”
The race in Paris was a display of exceptional talent, with nine other runners achieving personal bests. Jessica Hull of Australia secured second place with a time of 3:50.83, obliterating her own Oceania record by a significant five seconds.
Laura Muir of Great Britain followed closely behind in third place, setting a new British record of 3:53.79.
This record-breaking feat by Kipyegon comes just a day after another historic moment in athletics. Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh defied gravity with a jump of 2.10 meters, rewriting the world record in the women’s high jump event.
