Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian opening batter, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.

He succeeds Rahul Dravid, who stepped down after his contract expired following India’s T20 World Cup victory.

Gambhir, 42, has recently led Kolkata Knight Riders to the Indian Premier League title and has a strong playing and coaching background.

He made his India debut in 2003, scoring over 10,000 runs across all formats before retiring in 2016. Gambhir has also ventured into commentary and politics.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah expressed confidence in Gambhir’s ability to lead Team India forward, citing his experience and clear vision.

Gambhir’s first series as head coach will be a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka later this month, following India’s T20 World Cup win over South Africa in June.
