Vatican Excommunicates Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, a Vocal Critic of Pope Francis
- Vatican has excommunicated Carlo Maria Vigano
- Vigano, 83, was found guilty of schism
- Vigano was a senior figure in the Church
The Vatican’s doctrinal office has announced the excommunication of Carlo Maria Vigano, an Italian Archbishop and vocal critic of Pope Francis.
Vigano, 83, was found guilty of schism, meaning he has separated himself from the Catholic Church, following years of disagreement with the Pope.
The archbishop has previously called for the Pope’s resignation, accusing him of heresy and criticizing his stance on various issues.
Vigano was a senior figure in the Church, serving as papal envoy to Washington from 2011 to 2016. He has also been associated with conspiracy theories, criticizing Covid vaccines and alleging a “globalist” and “anti-Christian” project by the UN and other groups.
The Vatican’s statement said Vigano’s refusal to submit to Pope Francis was clear from his public statements, leading to his excommunication.
Vigano responded by posting the decree on social media, affirming his commitment to the Catholic faith.
This development follows the Vatican’s recent action against another ultra-conservative critic, Bishop Joseph E Strickland of Texas, who was dismissed after an investigation.
