Renowned lawyer Maurice Ampaw has shared his personal story of a strained relationship with his late father, Gibson Dokyi Ampaw, a prominent legal practitioner and former Minister of Health in the Busia regime.
In an emotional interview on the Delay Show, Lawyer Ampaw revealed that his parents’ separation at a young age led to a distant relationship with his father, despite their similar personalities and careers. He recounted only seeing his father three times in his entire life, with financial support being the only aspect of their relationship.
“My father took care of us financially, but I never had fatherly love,” Lawyer Ampaw lamented. “He used to call me a bad boy, a rascal, and threatened to have me arrested by the police. Funny enough, I was the only one among his kids who followed in his footsteps to become a lawyer. The son he rejected was the one who took after him.”
Despite their complicated relationship, Lawyer Ampaw acknowledged his father’s exceptional legal skills and impressive career, including his service as a Minister of Health and Member of Parliament. Gibson Dokyi Ampaw passed away in 2015, leaving behind 14 children from three marriages.
