The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has intervened in the controversy surrounding the parliamentary committee investigating the alleged plot against Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Following disagreements among committee members over the final report, Bagbin directed the committee to reconvene and complete their inquiry.
“It is evident that the committee has not finished its task,” Bagbin stated. “I instruct the committee to return and further deliberate on this matter.”
Bagbin emphasized that internal conflicts, particularly between Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea and Vice Chairman James Algalga, have hindered progress and jeopardized the integrity of the House’s decision-making process. Consequently, he imposed a gag order prohibiting Members of Parliament from making public comments on the issue until further notice, aiming to restore order and facilitate a constructive resolution.
Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea defended the committee’s stance, highlighting the necessity of thoroughly investigating allegations of extrajudicial killings attributed to the IGP. He underscored the importance of addressing all facets of the issue to ensure a comprehensive and impartial inquiry.
The committee’s recent report implicated several police officials in professional misconduct based on a leaked tape, recommending further investigation by the privileges committee for alleged false statements made during their appearances.
