The Minority caucus in Parliament has revealed intentions to organize a second protest, aiming to press for the dismissal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, alongside his two deputies.
Sources from within the caucus emphasized the need for replacing the current governor, alleging mismanagement that resulted in significant financial losses at the Central Bank.
Previously, members of the caucus staged a protest on October 3, 2023, demanding the resignation of the BoG’s top officials. The protest was prompted by revelations of a GH¢60.81 billion loss in the 2022 fiscal year and the allocation of over $250 million for constructing a new headquarters.
During the earlier protest, demonstrators gathered at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, proceeding through various city points before concluding at Independence Square. Despite efforts to present a petition directly to the governor, they were met by the head of security instead.
Following the unsuccessful protest, efforts have been underway to plan a new demonstration, delayed for nearly a year.
Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has been actively pursuing transparency regarding the BoG’s financial losses through an RTI request. He is set to lead the upcoming protest, having obtained necessary authorization and police clearance.
The forthcoming demonstration aims to amplify calls for accountability and leadership change within the Bank of Ghana, amid ongoing concerns over financial management and expenditure.
