“I Don’t Care About Kuami Eugene’s ‘Highlife King’ Crown” – Kwabena Kwabena

Renowned highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has broken his silence on the controversial “highlife king” status conferred on Kuami Eugene during the 2019 Ghana Music Awards.

In an interview with DJ Slim, Kwabena Kwabena clarified that his decision to boycott the award scheme was not influenced by Kuami Eugene’s crowning moment. He stated, “I didn’t have any issue with what legend Amakye Dede did… I am an artiste, I enjoy music. I don’t care about who is king or who is queen or who is a linguist. I only care about the art and its beauty.”

Kwabena Kwabena praised Kuami Eugene as a “fine artiste” with “great pieces” to his credit, adding that he has no problem with Amakye Dede’s decision to crown him.

This development comes after Amakye Dede revealed in a 2023 interview that he was forced to confer the title on Kuami Eugene, contrary to his own wishes.

Kuami Eugene had earlier refuted claims that the crowning was planned, describing it as a blessing instead.
