Shatta Bandle Apologizes For Spraying Naira Notes In Lagos
- Shatta Bandle apologizes for spraying Naira notes in Lagos, violating Nigerian currency laws
- Ghanaian social media personality regrets his actions, respects EFCC and Nigerian laws
- Nigeria's strict currency regulations impose fines and imprisonment for abuse, as seen in Bobrisky's arrest earlier this year
Ghanaian social media personality, Shatta Bandle, has tendered an apology to the Nigerian public and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for spraying Naira notes in Lagos. The incident, which occurred during his visit to Nigeria for Mr. Ibu’s funeral on June 28, has drawn attention due to Nigeria’s strict regulations against currency abuse.
In a viral video, Shatta Bandle was seen spraying Naira notes in public, an act that violates Nigerian laws. Earlier this year, Nigerian celebrity Bobrisky was arrested by the EFCC for similar currency mutilation and abuse.
Shatta Bandle has expressed remorse, stating that his intention was not to violate Nigerian laws. He explained that he started by spraying dollars but switched to Naira when the dollars ran out, leading to the violation. He emphasized his respect for the EFCC and Nigerian laws, referring to Nigeria as his second home.
“I apologise to you people; I didn’t come to break laws because Nigeria is my next home. I apologise to everybody, especially the EFCC, to forgive me for what I have done,” he said.
The Naira mutilation law imposes a penalty of imprisonment for a term of not less than six months or a fine of not less than N50,000 (approximately US$37) or both a fine and imprisonment for anyone convicted of currency abuse.
