A faulty engine has forced the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s oxygen plant to shut down since Monday, July 1, resulting in a shortage of oxygen supply at the facility.
The hospital, a major referral center for five regions in northern Ghana, is working to resolve the issue.
According to Public Relations Officer Zuberu Alidu, technical experts are working to repair the plant, but no timeline has been provided for completion. “A crucial component of the oxygen plant was damaged, causing the plant to shut down. We are currently liaising with suppliers in Kumasi to address the issue,” Alidu explained.
In the interim, the hospital has made available some oxygen concentrators to mitigate the shortage. A Medical Officer at the hospital urged calm among the public, assuring that measures are being taken to resolve the challenge.
“We have enough oxygen for now, and we are in touch with referring facilities, including the Ghana Health Service, to ensure a smooth continuation of services,” Alidu stated.
