“NDC Claims Chief Justice’s Supreme Court Judge Recommendations Unconstitutional”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the Chief Justice’s decision to recommend judges for nomination to the Supreme Court, labeling the move as unconstitutional. According to the NDC, the Chief Justice’s proposal is a clear violation of the constitution, which does not empower her to recommend individuals for nomination to the Supreme Court.

During a press conference in Accra, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey stated that the Chief Justice’s letter to President Akufo-Addo has no constitutional basis and therefore is null and void. Kwetey emphasized that the constitution clearly outlines the process for appointing Supreme Court judges, and the Chief Justice’s recommendation is not part of that process.

He expressed concern over the Chief Justice’s actions, which he believes compromise her independence as the head of the judicial system. The NDC also alleges that the President is appointing loyal members of his party to the Supreme Court to gain control over the judiciary and escape accountability.

The recommended judges include Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botchwey, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, Justice Eric Kyei Baffuour, and Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah. The NDC’s stance has sparked a heated debate over the appointment process and the role of the Chief Justice in recommending judges.

The opposition party’s criticism has also raised questions about the independence of the judiciary and the potential for political interference. The development has generated significant interest among legal experts, political analysts, and the general public, with many calling for clarity on the appointment process and the Chief Justice’s role.
