The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced a self-placement system for newly qualified teachers, marking a significant shift in the recruitment process. This innovation aims to address various challenges faced by teachers, including language barriers and financial difficulties.

A total of 12,720 newly qualified teachers, who have completed their degree programmes at colleges of education and passed their licensure exams, are eligible for the self-placement exercise. This follows an invitation from the GES for employment on May 11, 2024, which attracted over 20,000 applications.

The successful candidates in the first batch are required to visit the Ghana Education Service portal between July 5 and July 31, 2024, to complete the self-placement exercise. This platform allows them to select schools of their choice, taking into account factors such as language proficiency and proximity to their families.

According to the Director-General of GES, Eric Nkansah, the self-placement system aims to create an effective teaching and learning environment. “The self-posting recruitment model has the benefit of getting newly trained teachers posted to regions where language will not be a barrier,” he explained.

By allowing teachers to select schools where they can speak the local language, the GES hopes to improve teaching and learning outcomes. Additionally, the self-placement system enables teachers to choose schools close to their families, reducing financial burdens and enhancing economic support.

To access the self-placement platform, teachers are required to visit the GES portal and follow the same application process used during their initial application. The steps to access the platform and select schools of their choice are clearly outlined on the website.

The GES Director-General assured that the self-placement system is designed to ensure fairness and transparency in the recruitment process. “The steps that they need to follow to be able to access the platform and also to select the school of their choice are there once they visit the GES promotion platform,” he stated.

The introduction of the self-placement system is a significant milestone in the GES’s efforts to improve the teaching and learning environment in Ghana. By empowering newly qualified teachers to take charge of their career paths, the GES aims to enhance the overall quality of education in the country.

The self-placement exercise is scheduled to take place between July 5 and July 31, 2024. Teachers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to secure placements in schools that align with their preferences and career goals.

The GES’s self-placement system for newly qualified teachers marks a significant innovation in the recruitment process. By addressing language barriers and financial difficulties, the GES aims to create a more effective teaching and learning environment, ultimately benefiting the entire education sector in Ghana.
