Court Demands Medical Proof from Asiedu Nketiah Within 24 Hours

Story Highlights
  • NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia is facing a GHS20 million defamation lawsuit
  • Asiedu Nketia missed his scheduled defense on July 1st due to illness
  • The High Court in Accra has given Nketia's lawyers 24 hours to provide a medical certificate to verify his absence

The High Court in Accra has issued a directive to legal representatives of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, instructing them to submit a medical justification within the next day.

This requirement comes after Asiedu Nketiah failed to attend court proceedings to defend himself against a GHS20 million defamation lawsuit filed by former Auditor-General Professor Dua Agyeman.

The case revolves around allegations made by Asiedu Nketiah in the media, accusing Prof. Dua Agyeman of producing counterfeit audit reports, which purportedly led to his dismissal by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG).

Asiedu Nketiah, who has been absent from court since proceedings began in October 2018, was expected to present his defense on Monday, July 1, 2024. His absence on grounds of illness prompted the presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, to demand substantiation of his medical condition through a formal medical excuse.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Prof. Dua Agyeman commented, “This is their modus operandi – they propagate falsehoods and then evade accountability.”
