The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD), led by Ursula Owusu Ekuful, is launching the Girls in ICT Trust to empower girls and bridge the digital divide.
This program will provide digital skills training and mentorship opportunities, equipping girls for careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
From Challenges to Sustainable Growth
The initiative addresses past funding hurdles that delayed implementation. Recognizing the program’s positive impact, the MoCD, along with government and private partners, aim to ensure its long-term success.
A Multi-Stakeholder Approach
Ms. Owusu Ekuful highlighted a board of trustees for the Girls in ICT Trust. This board will seek funding from public and private entities, including companies and donor agencies. The goal is to significantly expand the program’s reach, from 3,000 girls trained annually to at least 10,000. The mentorship program will also be strengthened and expanded.
Public-Private Partnership for Efficiency
The Trust represents a unique public-private partnership (PPP) leveraging resources from both sectors to maximize the program’s impact. The government believes this PPP will offer greater flexibility and efficiency in fundraising and ensure long-term sustainability.
Monitoring and Evaluation for Continuous Improvement
The program’s impact on the girls’ lives will be systematically monitored and evaluated. Mentors will play a key role in tracking progress and providing guidance.
A Model for Others
The Girls in ICT Trust is a significant step towards institutionalizing digital skills training for girls in Ghana. It serves as a model for other countries to emulate in efforts to narrow the gender digital divide.
