Ghana Increases LEAP Grant Payments To Empower Vulnerable Households

The Government of Ghana has released GHȼ103.25 million to support 324,073 beneficiary households in the 89th cycle (January & February 2024) of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program. Payments will begin nationwide on Monday, July 1st, 2024.
Significant Increase in Grant Amounts
This disbursement reflects a doubling of the initial cash grants for beneficiaries. Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, highlighted the revised amounts:
- One-member household: GHȼ256 (from GHȼ128)
- Two-member household: GHȼ304 (from GHȼ152)
- Three-member household: GHȼ352 (from GHȼ176)
- Four-member household: GHȼ424 (from GHȼ212)
Commitment to Poverty Reduction
Minister Newman emphasized the government’s dedication to alleviating poverty and improving the lives of Ghana’s most vulnerable citizens. The increased grants aim to provide essential support and empower families to meet basic needs and invest in their futures.
Addressing Delays and Ensuring Transparency
Acknowledging past delays in LEAP disbursements, Minister Newman assured Ghanaians of a more consistent schedule moving forward. She explained that securing funding and implementing necessary sensitization efforts contributed to previous delays. A monitoring and reassessment process will be established to ensure the program reaches its intended beneficiaries.
Historical Context and Appreciation
This upward adjustment follows a 100% increase in LEAP grants implemented in June 2023. The Minister expressed gratitude to partner organizations, including the World Bank, World Food Programme, and Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, for their ongoing support of the LEAP program.
