Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has formally urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to nominate five judges to Ghana’s Supreme Court, aiming to strengthen the judiciary with highly qualified legal experts.
The nominees include Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botchwey, currently overseeing the contentious ambulance trial involving Parliament’s Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Also recommended are Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng, Justice Eric Kyei Baffour, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah.
In her May 30 letter to President Akufo-Addo, Chief Justice Torkornoo detailed the nominees’ qualifications and current responsibilities.
She emphasized Justice Edward Amoako Asante’s notable tenure at the ECOWAS Court of Justice, where he was asked to extend his service due to regional developments until 2026 or earlier, upon which he is expected to join Ghana’s judiciary.
The recommendation underscores a strategic move to harness Justice Asante’s extensive experience gained from his ECOWAS role for the benefit of Ghana’s highest court.
